I came upon this buried sumac cluster in the snow today on an icy trail. What a contrast to the white and cloudy day the red is. Love to see the bits of color sprinkled or popping out of hiding throughout nature.

This morning I was greeted by this beautiful sunrise. It caught my eye and drew me outside with my camera. Sunrises are a nice welcome to the day. Accompanied this sunrise were the birds chirping in the morning routine.

I love this thistle that was bent over and is hanging down! I think it is neat that the thistle is surrounded by a crown. Still neat plants to observe in the winter on hikes!

Went on a beautiful hike today along a river! Found this really thick ice along the shoreline. Amazed at how thick the ice shelf was!!

There is a green plant out there!! A strong and hardy briar plant. It is with standing frigid temps, wind, snow, ice, and many other harsh winter elements. Great to see life out on my nature walks, no matter how small it is!

I found green!! In the winter time seeing green is a hard thing at times. This moss is neat as it decorates a tree. When looking really close to moss one can find such intricate detail. Pretty.

Love to go hiking and seeing the different plants with their different shades of brown. These plants are neat with their ball shape tops.  It is neat to see how plants look different in the different seasons.

This is something new to see for me. A horizontal icicle!! The shape of it is really cool with the spikes hanging down from it. Looks like one of nature's fragile creations.

These shelf fungus are just huge!! I think they are cool. The snow is still resting on them during the winter months. Such strong fungus to still be hanging on during all the winter storms and wind.

I spotted this vine wrapping itself around the tree. It is bad that it will choke the tree. But, the way that the vine has shaped itself around the tree is one of the ways nature can be artsy. I guess something positive out of the bad.

This creek I like to check out often and see what is going on. Especially, during the different seasons. Today the creek has slowed down a lot due to becoming frozen. On the surface showing specks and clumps of frost. Very pretty.

The deer love to make their way through my backyard on their daily routine. The nice thing about snow is I can see their pattern of travel which is harder to spot in the Spring/Summer. It is need to be part of their story of where they travel in their winter life journey.

Queen Anne's Lace plant is pretty even in the winter time. The way the plant has spires during the winter is really cool. I picked this photo because I was practicing today on making the snow whiter than the grey result in other settings. A nice warmer sunny day to have a nature walk outside.

This Morning Dove was hiding on the pine tree branches. I barely noticed him with his color and his surroundings. The branches of the tree were providing him shelter from the wind and snow. He stayed on the branch for awhile before flying off.

Lots of snow fell over the night. The woods are covered in snow! Very beautiful how it has coated the tree trunks and branches. The sun shines to help the snow glisten. Also, to add some warmth to the walk.

Nature Photo Day #8 : Downy Woodpecker Nests

It certainly is a freezing day. Thought this picture is perfect for today. Just wanting to stay in my home and stay warm. These holes are active as I saw the Downy Woodpecker fly in and out of these holes. He has certainly called this place his home.

Today I went to check on a river by my house. It is still running fast considering the single digit temperatures of late. In the current you can see ice floating on top of the river. There are nice ice caps forming on the sides of the river banks. Cold day to be out but the sun felt nice at the shoreline of the river.

Went bird hunting today on my nature walk!  This Downy Woodpecker made his presence known by chirping, flying in and out of his hole, and pecking the wood.  He was very busy with his daily routine that he didn't really seemed bothered by my presence. I think he is adorable and glad I got a glimpse of his day.

It is 7 degrees out where I am. Found this icicle and thought this is perfect for the type of temperature were having today. I'm finding icicles hanging from many things outside. I find them pretty when light shines through them!

Woke up this morning with it snowing. A snow blanket on the trees and ground covering were present. It was a beautiful walk through the woods.  These red berries spoke out in presence in the white powdery environment.  Winter snow is so beautiful.

Nature Photo of the Day #3: Raindrops

A rainy winter day for a nature walk. Fun to walk among the drops. Hearing the rain fall and hit the little snow that is on the ground is relaxing. The raindrops are slow to drop from the tree branches due to the freezing temps. Waiting to see how much of the freezing rain coats the landscape.

Found these seeds today basking in the sun! I remember playing with these as a child. Watching them fall to the ground. So much potential hanging from that stem. Just waiting for the opportunity to fall to the ground. Similar to how we wait for opportunities to fall upon us. So, we can grow and bless other opportunities upon others.

Starting a 365 Day Nature Project for this year! Everyday a new nature photo will be posted! Today it is cold, windy, and not much snow. This pine cone caught my eye today among the green pine needles of a conifer tree on my nature walk.
